We are delighted to announce that our distillery is now part of a global sustainability programme by Ecologi. It is extremely important to us as a business that we can grow our operation in the most sustainable and responsible way possible.

We have estimated Jenny’s (our still) annual energy consumption and our staff’s carbon footprint and have offset these emissions by donating each month towards Ecologi’s many programmes to make the planet greener. Its only a small contribution by us on the scale of things but hopefully we are making the start many businesses should be taking in helping out any way we can for future generations.

The programmes we are involved in specifically, are tree planting initiatives for new forests & mangroves in Madagascar & Mozambique, peatland restoration projects & converting landfill gas to energy around the world. So far we have planted 83 new trees & offset 5.31 tonnes of CO2 in our first month & a half of joining. These figures will increase each month as we continue our support.

We will make a promise now that this partnership is for life!

Our distillery is proud to announce that we are the new official shirt sponsor for the local Clifton Hampden Cricket Club for the remainder of this season and the 2022 season. Our gin will be flowing from the clubhouse following each match and we will be presenting a Man of the Match award every week with the deserved winner taking home a mini bottle of our gin.

Clifton Hampden village is next door to Abingdon and the cricket team play in the Cherwell Cricket League.

I accepted our new match shirt from the team captain Morley Benson on Saturday which was a pleasure, with the team going on to win the match and top the league. What a debut!

I approached Vault Vermouths with the idea of re-using the gin soaked sloe berries that would usually go to waste once our sloe gin is ready to bottle. They wanted to do a summer styled vermouth that was made using ingredients that would usually go to waste to be more sustainable.

Cue Vault Vermouth x Abingdon Distillery Rose Vermouth.

Using English rosé wine from Westwell in Kent as the base, combined with the last of the Yorkshire Rhubarb, the first of the English strawberries, surplus Gin soaked sloe berries , excess grapefruit, destined-for-waste lemon leaves that arrive with our Amalfi lemons, dandelion, burdock, cassia, cinchona, hibiscus & wormwood. Fortified with unsweetened Abingdon sloe gin.

This is our quintessential British summer drinking vermouth. Fresh, lively and fruit forward with strawberry and rhubarb all over the palate, and a long gentle herbaceous finish. Enjoy straight over ice with a slice of pink grapefruit, or tall with tonic.

Key notes: strawberry, rhubarb and sloe berries

You can read all about Vault here – https://www.vaultvermouth.com/

To round off a crazy week of awards that we have received for some of our gins, our Port Barrel-Aged Gin has also taken a gold medal at The Gin Masters 2021. This year was the biggest number of gin entries in the competitions history with over 450 entrants from across the world so to receive a gold medal from the judging panel is absolutely amazing. To be placed amongst some of the finest distilleries in the world is an incredible feeling!

Both releases from our new Cask Series range have taken gold medals at international spirits competitions, something I never thought would happen a few weeks ago. I can’t wait to release the 3rd expression in our Cask Series this July.

It is great to receive such positive feedback from the judging panel! There is obviously room for improvement and we have already planned a few tweaks to our maceration recipe for batch 3 which will be be laid down once the sloe berries are ready to be picked this September.

Not only that, it scored 95/100 from the judging panel and came 1st in the aged gin category. Unbelievable!

This is what the judges had to say – “The nose offers woody notes, spicy cinnamon and a deep maltiness; surprisingly light on the palate with bright lemon zest and gorgeous agrodolce marmalade flavours. The clear, unabashed Scotch influence is expertly integrated and sings in harmony with the botanicals”

Being a small distillery this recognition means everything to us. Thank you to the judges and of course our customers for buying a bottle.

The second release in our Cask Series, our Port Barrel-Aged Gin. The inspiration for creating this was fuelled by my love of port wine and to create a gin that would be great for the summer months ahead.

Our signature London Dry gin is aged for a secret length of time in freshly dumped ruby port casks from a winery in Portugal. These casks have aged ruby port for 8 years, taking on the fruity characteristics of the fortified wines. Each cask we lay down with gin is never the same & timing is crucial as to when it is ready. Too early and the flavour profile will be under developed. Too much time in the cask & the gin will be overpowered with tanins & bitterness from the oak. What goes in the cask at the start comes out at the end, we don’t dilute back. This is limited to a 200 bottle release.

Tasting Notes;

Nose: Sweet red fruits , vanilla & baked spices.

Palate: Dry juniper with jam & sweet red grapes

Finish: Subtle vanilla with baked spices. Creamy.

Signature Serve – Serve tall over ice with a classic Indian tonic water & garnish with fresh strawberries for a refreshing summery G&T. Sip neat to explore the complexity of this gin or make a Pink Negroni.

Introducing our new Cask Series range, 3 gins cask aged in hand selected barrels from around the world.

The first release from our Cask Series, our Single Malt Cask-Aged Gin, a craft gin that breaks the norm and doesn’t need tonic. Our signature London Dry gin is aged for a secret length of time in Octave casks from a Speyside distillery in Scotland. These casks have housed single malt whisky for over a decade, taking on rich new complex flavours.

Expressions 2 & 3 from the range will release end of June & July respectively.

Back in October last year I felt the time was right to delve into the depths of branding and to think long and hard about our distillery and our identity. Our gin had been out in bottle form for almost 18 months and our sales were slowly growing. When we started back in 2018, it was a quick job i’m not going to lie. Not a lot of thought was put into our bottle & labels, our main focus was perfecting a gin recipe, and starting out budget was tight so we just rolled with a simple label & an off the shelf bottle.

After selecting a branding designer just before Xmas, we started work in the New Year. I wanted our brand to reflect the strong history of Abingdon (it is after all the oldest town in England with a huge market history) but also stay contemporary in style to reflect the modern approach to our methods of craft distilling. Our new bottle design is unlike any other on the craft gin market & finding the right bottle for this project was probably the hardest task of all.

It’s been a long 6 months since we started the project, with Brexit really impacting some of our suppliers and delivery times, but I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome. Our bottles are stunning!

I would like to place a huge thank you to Benjamin, our designer, from Benjamin Charles Studios for brining our vision to life. Also a thank you to Label Apeel printers for their seriously slick embossing & foiling work on the labels.

Now, onto a new website…….

Introducing our new hybrid rotary column pot still, Jenny. She is 40 litres in capacity and will increase our gin production output by 2 fold so we can keep up with demand as our customer base grows.

Jenny is 100% copper and has been hand made from scratch for us by Copper Brothers in Portugal. It’s taken a while till she was ready and then a few delays post Brexit shipping, but it’s worth it, she is beautiful.

As she is a hybrid still, she can run in either a traditional pot mode or a column mode by using the column extender. The added column section has a gin basket in the middle allowing us to vapour infuse certain botanicals rather than macerating and boiling everything in the pot together.

We will be commissioning her tomorrow and then a couple of cleaning runs to flush out the dirt from the condensing pipes and welding points.
